Mayor Beng Climaco will spearhead the observance of Flag Day today, May 28 in fitting rites set at 7am at the Rizal Monument fronting City Hall.

The activity is a nationwide event marking the day when the Philippine flag was first unfurled after the Philippine Revolutionary Army headed by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo defeated the Spanish forces in the Battle of Alapan in Cavite on May 18, 1898.

The Zamboanga observance will kick off at 6am with parade by members of the Caballeros de Colon de Zamboanga (Knights of Columbus) from Mayor Jaldon Street to the Rizal Monument where the flag raising ceremony will start at exactly 7am.

The program will be highlighted by the keynote speech of Mayor Climaco who will talk about the significance of the commemoration of Flag Day to present times. Sir Knight Gerardo Marcelino, faithful navigator of the Lady of Mount Carmel Assejbly will give the opening remarks while the pledge of allegiance will be led by Sir Knight Jimmy Tandoc of the Lady of Purification Assembly.

Sir Knight Jose Tan, Jr., the Mindanao State Warren will introduce the guest speaker while SK Victor Moreno, faithful navigator of the Nuestra Señora La Birgen del Pilar Assembly will deliver the closing message.

The Zamboanga Flag Day activity is organized by the Nuestra Señora Virgen del Pilar Assembly (Fourth Degree in the Philippines) in cooperation with the Caballeros de Colon de Zamboanga Inc. (Knights of Columbus). The declaration of the national flag day is by virtue of RA 8491 otherwise known as the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines.

As this developed, City Hall has enjoined the general public to prominently display the Philippine flag in their residences and/or places of business starting Saturday, May 28 until June 12 in solidarity with the nationwide observance of National Flag Day to commemorate the date the national symbol was first unfurled on Philippine soil. — Sheila Covarrubias
