Twenty one young mendicants were rounded up by policemen in the city’s different downtown streets recently.

Personnel of the Women and Children Protection Desk under Supt. Diomarie Albarico conducted a round-up operation at Pettit Barracks around 4 p.m. two Sundays ago and Gov. Lim Avenue netting five young mendicants ages, 11 and 10. They were from barangays Sta. Catalina, Baliwasan and Mampang.

Around 9:30 a.m. Friday, the same team conducted another round-up operation along Zaragosa Street, Gov. Camins Avenue, Canelar, Buenavista and Jaldon Street resulting in the rescue of 16 mendicants. They were aged 5, 11, 3, 9, 14, 13, 10, 12, 8, 7, and Asmad Shima, 20.

Mendicants came from different barangays, police said.

ALL were turned over to the City Social Development Office and Social Development Center.

The operation was part of the police program to clear children and adults from roaming  around the city proper. – Dan Toribio
