Councilor Lilia Macrohon Nuño, chairperson of the City Council’s Committee on Women and Children and Health and Sanitation, launched yesterday two pilot community projects on waste disposal and segration in Barangays Tetuan and Tumaga.

The opening program in Tumaga was attended by barangay officials and members of the women sector of the barangay.
Councilor Nuño said the purpose of the community projects on waste disposal and segration, and why women were the direct participants was because women are really a great help to educate their husband, children and their relatives on how to be responcible in disposing their garbages at home.

“It is good that it will start in every family, work together  to segregate garbages and disposethem for common good, and have clean environment and community,” Nuño said.

She explained that segregating and disposing garbages must start at home and in every family in the pilot barangays of Tetuan and Tumaga. Thereafter, when the project will be successful, It will  continue in other barangays and sooner or later  will be implemented in  the city’s 98 barangays.

However, she explained, there must be pilot barangays to educate the people.

“Garbages when segregated are very useful. The biodegrable can be used and recycled for fertilizer and non-biodegrable can be recycled for use as new material. Some people who buy volume of garbages like non-biodegrable make business on it and it is income generating,” Nuño said.

Meanwhile, Nuño disclosed that together with colleagues Councilors Myra Paz Abubakar, Percival Ramos and Rey Candido, they arepreparing a draft for the proposed ordinance on smoking prohibition in the city.

She said the group is preparing for the schedule of the first reading in the next session. — Allen Abastillas
