The Muslim world in this Month of Sha’ban joyfully anticipates the advent to Ramadan fasting through the observance of moon-sighting which falls on June 5, 2016 (29th Sha’ban 1437 A.H.) according to a message from Ustadz Wahid Amil and Ustadz Jamal Munib to Prof. Ali T. Yacub, Al-Hj., president, Golden Crescent Consortium of Peace Builders and Affiliates, a Muslim CSO leader in the city of Zamboanga.

Ustadz Amil and Ustadz Munib, are both ranking members of the Darul Iftah, a religious council of the Ulama in the city.

Muslims worldwide, according to Prof. Yacub fast in the Holy Month of Ramadan in observance to God’s command which was prescribed in the Holy Qur’an and stated as: “Fasting is prescribe for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may guard (yourselves) against evil.” (Qur’an, 2:182)

“The history of fasting went back to the dawn of history, when man did not find any means better than fast to ascend above yielding to his desires and worldly wishes, attain spiritual uplift, return to spirituality and renounce contemptible habits to which he become addicted and which led him to perdition,” Prof. Yacub said.

Divinely Creeds (Jews, Christianity and Islam), non-Muslim societies and former nations have been familiar with the fast, the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Chinese, Hindus and Buddhists had observed the fast in times past.

Jesus Christ and his Virgin Mother Mary, daughter of Imran (Amram) was reported to have observed the fast on the Day of Atonement. Moses and followers observed the 40-day fast, Prof. Yacub emphasized.

The month of Ramadan fast can only begin after the observance of the moon-sighting ritual which had been declared by the Ulama to fall on June 5, 2016, in accordance with the command of the Holy Propheet Muhammed (SAW) thus, if the moon will be sighted after sunset of June 5, 2016 fasting commences throughout the country and the neighboring Muslim states on June 6, 2016 but if the crescent moon cannot be sighted due to cloudy skies and other natural phenomenon, automatically fasting shall take place on June 7, 2016 without announcement from the religious authorities, Prof. Yacub said.

Let it be noted that on the first day of fasting, it is not a declared holiday in the city, but in the ARMM area, the Autonomous Government has its own rules to follow.

To the Muslims, they know who are obligated to fast, who are excused and exempted with good reasons. Our Ulama will elucidate these in all their sermons during Friday congregations before the Holy Month of Ramadan and during the fasting season.

While the Muslims know that the fasting of Ramadan was prescribed to commemorate the revelation of the Holy Qur’an, but little is known that other Holy Scriptures of the other Abrahamic Faith (Jews and Christians) were also revealed in the Month of Ramadan, according to Islamic tradition: the Books of Abraham, the Patriarch were revealed on the first night of Ramadan, the Torah of Moses was revealed on the sixth of the Month of Ramadan, the Gospel of Jesus (Christ) was revealed on the thirteenth of the Month of Ramadan, the Psalms (Zahur) of David were revealed on the eighteenth of the Month of Ramadan and the Holy Qur’an on the twenty-fourth of the Month of Ramadan, Prof. Yacub concluded. — GCCPBA Media Section
