A man and his mother were killed while five other family members were injured when the Starex van they were riding collided with a passenger bus at Sitio Calanasan, Quiniput Wednesday morning.

Chief Insp. Ramon Bautista, Curuan Police Station commande, identified the fatalities as Dionisio Palma y Bernabe, Jr., 32, married and his mother Caridad Ciruelos y Palma, 56.

Injured were Julie Galdon y Jaucula, 4, Lovely Palma y Jaucula, 27, married, Rysel Lyka Ciruelos y Palma, 12, Dionisio Palma y Butigan, Sr., 56 and Rosel Ciruelos Palma, 36, married, all natives of Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte.

Bautista said that a Liza May Express bus was travelling from Zamboanga City to Sirawai and Siocon in Zamboanga del Norte when the collision with the Starex took place at Sitio Calanasan.

The bus driver saw a motorcycle stopped ahead of them, prompting  him to steer the bus to the left and encroached the other lane where the Starex van driven by Dionisio Jr., with six members of the family aboard was travelling on the opposite direction.

Bautista said the bus collided with the van head-on.

All the van passengers sustained multiple injuries in the body and were rushed to the hospital. But Dionisio Jr. and his mother were declared dead on arrival.

The bus driver who was later identified as Arnel Rondovio surrendered to the police. —  Dan Toribio
