To ensure a clean and litter-free surroundings, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) implements the Basura Patrol Program in Region 9, that will monitor and rid environmental-hazard activities such as littering of garbage, open dumping and open burning.

EMB-9 Ecological Solid Waste Management (ESWM) Chief David Rojas, Jr. said the bureau recently hired 10 regional Basura Patrollers (BP) who will monitor and strictly implement penal provisions on anti-littering and anti-burning of RA 9003, otherwise known as Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

The Basura Patrollers will be watching public places such as major thoroughfares, roads, sidewalks, canals, parks, and esteros and see if cleanliness is in place among the local government units’ (LGUs) jurisdiction in Region 9.

Rojas said of the 10 basura patrollers, three (3) were deployed in Zamboanga del Norte; three (3) in Zamboanga Del Sur and four (4) in Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga City and Isabela City, Basilan.

Prior their deployment on May 16, the BPs had their proper training held May 11-13 on the basic enforcement techniques and strategies, marine environmental protection, enforcement of marine environmental laws and regulations, and environmental investigation from representatives of the Philippine National Police and Coast Guard.

Basura Patrollers are hired under job order status and will be given P12,000 per month as compensation.  The program runs from May to December 2016. The implementation of the Basura Patrol Program in the region coincides with the celebration of Philippine Environment Month this June. —  Jocelyn P. Alvarez
