District 1 re-elected Celso Lobregat expressed his gratitude to incoming Department of Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol for granting his request to visit Zamboanga City the soonest and form it as part of his itinerary in the “Biyaheng Bukid” caravan.

Lobregat had invited Piñol to conduct a personal assessment on the present status of government projects in the city under the Agriculture department for him to have a first-hand information about the matter.

The solon said that he was glad when he called up Piñol and made the personal request  the secretary did not decline and immediately flew to Zamboanga last Wednesday to conduct his personal evaluation on the status of the agriculture sector in the city.

“I was elated on the immediate response of the incoming DA Secretary Piñol, he didn’t say no to my request to visit Zamboanga and see for himself the plight of our farmers here who were greatly affected by the drought lately,” Lobregat said.

Being a former three-term chief executive of the city, Lobregat briefed Piñol about the current situation and problems the farmers are experiencing, also, related to the secretary the voluminous questionable projects on irrigation systems, grants and programs of the national government coursed thru the agriculture department.

Since the secretary is no stranger to him, Lobregat is optimistic that the local farmers will regain glory and comfort in their livelihood, being a close ally of the new agriculture chief.

“Being a farmer himself, I know Secretary Piñol will not spare our farmers from his laudable priorities in improving the lives of these marginalized sector, we should be proud we have him who is from Mindanao and who understands the farmers better being one of them,” Lobregat said.

During his visit to the city, Lobregat facilitated the visit of the incoming DA Secretary to the WMSU College of Agriculture, the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), Western Mindanao Command (WESMINCOM) as well as a dialogue with the farmers, fisherfolks, and other agricultural sectors of the city who were able to voice out their personal sentiments and problems.
