District 1 re-elected Congressman Celso L. Lobregat discussed with incoming President Rodrigo Duterte various issues as well as the new composition of the 17th Congress during a one-on-one meeting that lasted for one hour at the Presidential Palace of the south in Panabo, Davao Oriental the other day.

“I am lucky, because of so many officials and private individuals who wish to have an appointment with the elected president, I was immediately granted an audience with a very short notice, and we had one hour of talk regarding the concerns of our city,” Lobregat said.

Lobregat, together with Councilor Myra Paz Valderrosa-Abubakar called on the president elect Thursday night last week.

With a confirmed appointment, Congressman Lobregat and Councilor Abubakar flew to Davao Thursday afternoon to meet the president. After an almost three-hour press conference of the President with the media, the scheduled meeting with Duterte took place at almost 11:00 o’clock in the evening.

The Zamboanga solon said that local issues affecting Zamboanga City were tackled like the drug menace, peace and order and health issues which is one of the priorities of the president, to include the plans of new presidet on how the congress would run in support to the priorities of his presidency.

Lobregat described as a reunion of sorts of members of former 11th congress where most of his former colleagues were re-united and are also in the present government of president-elect Duterte who forms part of the congress in the past.

Lobregat is known to be a close ally of Duterte as both of them were officers of the Mayors’ League of the Philippines and colleagues in the 11th Congress.

Sources close to Lobregat said until now Duterte considers him as a friend and a “brother”.

The meeting was followed by another meeting where five other Duterte allies discussed with Congressman Lobregat a wide range of issues to include election-related issues, both national and local, congress and federalism.

During the meeting, President Duterte cited the other members of the 11th Congress to include incoming House Speaker Congressman Bebot Alvarez and then Congressman Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro.

Other issues discussed were the media, police, drugs and security issues. President Duterte also took time to talk the individual concerns of the well-wishers which included Sen. Heherson Alvarez, Davao Councilor Myrna Dalodo Ortiz, Mitch Cajayon-Uy and Tobias Javier.

A very person, Duterte posed individually with Congressman Lobregat, Councilor Myra Paz Abubakar and the others. President Duterte also personally signed a few copies of the May 23 issue of Time Magazine featuring the President on the cover.

Both Lobregat and Councilor Abubakar personally thanked and congratulated Bong Go who was appointed as special assistant to the President with general supervision over the Presidential Management staff.

Together with then Congressman Duterte and Congressman Lobregat in the 11th Congress were Cong. Rudy Fariñas and Cong. Nonoy Andaya touted to be the incoming majority floor leader and incoming chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations respectively.
