The city government started releasing Wednesday, June 8, salaries for students hired under the 2016 Summer Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) right in time for enrolment period and eventual opening of classes.

City Social Welfare and Development Officer Socorro Roxas said the first batch of SPES beneficiaries, comprising mostly of college students can claim their salaries at the City Treasurer’s Office during office hours.

The students are required to present their identification cards and certificate of identification, to claim their salaries.

A total of 1,400 mostly college students are included in the first batch of SPES program and worked from April 11 to May 6. Each SPES beneficiary receives a compensation of P280 per day or a total of P5,600 for the 20-day program period.

Of the P280 daily pay, P168 or 60% comes from the local government unit while P112 or 40% will be paid by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in the form of payment vouchers.

Mayor Climaco has allocated some P9.27 million for the SPES benefitting 2,760 college and high school students this year.

Organized jointly by the City Government through the CSWDO and the DOLE, the SPES is created under Republic Act 7323, series of 1999 as amended by RA 9547 which seeks to encourage employment during summer, through incentives granted by the LGU and DOLE on a 60-40% sharing. The program intends to help poor but deserving students through their employment during summer. —Sheila Covarrubias
