Even with the ample power supply in the city, schools in barangays affected by the 2013 siege may have to start the school year without electrical power.

This as the bidding for materials needed to reconnect the schools to the Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative (ZAMCELCO) system had failed.

Zamcelco PIO Ferdie Rodriguez, explained during last Monday’s regular press briefing that the procurement process was done through the National Electrification Authority (NEA).

However, there was a failure of bidding as participating bidders – two of which are from Zamboanga City – were disqualified for inability to supply the requested items within the budget allocation.

Rodriguez further expounded that the suppliers found the prices stipulated in the purchase request were much lower than the current market price.

Hence, the ZAMCELCO official said, affected schools would have to wait until the necessary materials have been procured before power supply can be restored. — Claudine Uniana
