An alleged notorious 31-year-old man was killed in a shootout with policemen in Cawit few hours after he shot to death two canning factory workers and wounded another in the violence-prone barangay of Recodo last Thursday.

City Police Director Sr. Supt. Edwin De Ocampo identified the slain suspect as Abil Adil y Utoh, 31, married, of Cawit.
De Ocampo said that operatives of the Ayala Police Station led by Supt. Hado Edding engaged in a shootout with Adil around 5 p.m.

Edding told Daily Zamboanga Times that right after the gun attack that killed Roel Villanueva and Ronie Arias and wounded Edito Laubun in Purok 5, Recodo around 12 noon, he and his men went on a hot pursuit operation against Adil who was positively identified by some witnesses as the assailant.

At 5 p.m., Edding and his men went to Adil’s house in Cawit in an effort to convince the family to have him surrender.
However, Edding said that Adil’s mother denied the presence of her son saying that he was not at home. In an inspection, Edding’s men found at the house
Adil’salleged get-away motorcycle, a Honda XRM, a bonnet and sunglasses.

Despite the recovery of the items to be used as evidences, Adil’s mother still insisted that he was not around. The lawmen noticed that a room inside the house was locked. Edding and his men tried to check if Adil was inside the room, but suddenly the door opened and Adil lobbed an MK2 fragmentation grenade at the policemen.
The lawmen managed to take cover before the grenade exploded.     Insp. Albert Alfaro, Edding’s deputy,  sustained injuries in the body after he jumped into a deep
well to save himself.

Edding said that Adil, who was with an alleged lesbian, opened fire on them while they sought cover from the grenade explosion. This prompted them to return fire killing Adil.  The alleged lesbian escaped.

Recovered by the policemen at Adil’s house were a 9mm pistol loaded with two rounds in the magazine,  a.38 cal. revolver with 12 bullets and a six-inch long knife.
Edding said that Adil was a companion of Alnazer Daris who is behind several holdups in downtown Zamboanga and also involved in drug peddling in the west coast.
Police also said that Adil’s brother was stabbed and killed by an unidentified man during the barangay fiesta in Ayala fiesta last July 16.
Edding added that Adil’s alleged lesbian companion has sent feeler to surrender. — Dan Toribio Jr.
