The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Zamboanga City Chapter has revealed that they only have 156 bags of blood left at the PRC Zamboanga Blood Bank describing it as alarming.

The 156 bags of blood is composed of 51 for blood type O, 38 blood type A, 50 blood type B, and 17 for blood type AB. This is inclusive of Packed Red Blood Cells, Whole Blood, and Platelets.

“For the past few days, diamun stock is very low it is not enough to serve. El quiere era kame everytime we receive request for blood and its components, tiene kame sangre para man serve poreso nececita gayot tiene kame enough supply of blood para every request is served,” said PRC Zamboanga Donor Recruitment Officer Joan A. Luna in an interview.

Last June 14, the supply went to as low as 66 bags of blood which is composed of blood types O, A, AB, and B. Each bag contains 450 cc of blood.

She said the reason for the low supply of blood is that the office is experiencing lean months inwhich only few people are going to the office to donate blood when they are not in need. Lean months include March, April, and May.

PRC is serving 30 patients a day and only about 10 persons are coming to the PRC Blood Bank to donate their blood voluntarily and these donors are mostly workers and students. PRC needs to collect 200 units of blood a day to properly serve Zamboanga, Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi Tawi.

“There is a need to donate blood regularly cay el diaton increasing demand for blood hende ta abaha.” Luna said.

In lieu of this, the office is asking for Basilan, and other neighboring provinces to conduct their bloodletting and the office will be willing to help. If in need of blood, it is encouraged that they bring with them a blood donor.

She stressed, “we are not only serving the people of Zamboanga, tali pa el Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi Tawi which they seek medical assistance aki na diaton lugar.”

The office makes sure that the blood donation will not harm the blood donors and the patients.

Blood is usually being needed by pregnant women, patients involved in accident, cancer patients, dialysis patients, and others.

The blood processing fee for whole blood is P1,800, packed RBC P1,500, and for platelets P1,000. These fees go for the reagents which are being used to test for Hepatitis B and C, HIV, Malaria, and Syphilis to assure safe blood will be given to the patients.

PRC and the Zamboanga City Medical Center are the only two authorized blood banks in this city.

Donating blood is like changing oil of motorvehicle. Because of  blood donation the bone marrow is simulated to produce new red blood cells, which will make our blood forming organs function more effectively. Blood donation is good  for personal health free check up of blood type, blood pressure and physical examination by the doctor.

Qualified to donate blood are those 18 to 65 years old, weighing 50 kilogram with normal blood pressure, and hemoglobin count not less than 125 gm/ml.

The PRC’s six major services are the blood program, Red Cross Youth, community health and nursing services, disaster management services, safety services and social services. — R.G. A A. Go
