The city government has announced that it has allocated P20 to P30 million included in the 2017 budget for lot acquisition intended for the city jail’s proposednew site.

“We know the city jail is beyond the standard and there are very specific instructions from the mayor to include in the 2017 budget the transfer of the city jail.” said City Planning and Development Officer Engr. Rodrigo Sicat in an interview

The city planning office in coordination with the city assessor’s office is already looking at government lands that are available. However, there are things to consider such as the area should be far from the central business district, it should not be located in residential areas but also quite near because the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology has to transport the inmates to court for case hearings.

According to Sicat, they already have candidate areas such as Barangays Culianan, Cabaluay, Sangali, and Sinunuc but these are not final. At least five hectares of land are planned for the project.

A meeting will also be scheduled together with Zamboanga City Jail warden, J/ Superintendent, Julius Arro regarding the matter to thresh out issues regarding specifications for a jail facility.

The budget will be available by second quarter next year. For the old jail facility located at Varela Street which is owned by the local government, an investor might come in and the city will earn or the city might construct a building and have it rented.

Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar said, “that is one of the priorities that we have to put up a new city jail.”

Salazar said the local government will be able to provide the lot,  but “what about the building?”

Meanwhile, Jail  Warden Julius Arro also revealed that the number of inmates detained at the local jail  is now more than 2,000. — R.G. A A. Go
