City caretaker and OIC Mayor Cesar Iturralde will lead Thursday, June 23, the commemoration of Dia de Fundacion Chavacano highlighting the founding of the chavacano language and recognizing its role as one of the pillars of the Zamboanga culture.

The activity will kick off with a commemorative program set at 8am at Centro Latino in Paseo del Mar. The 1st Chavacano Speech Choir competition with 4 participating schools will follow immediately after the program at 9am.

The commemoration will culminate with the CineChavacano Festival de Pelicula y Animacion Awards Night at 7pm also at Centro Latino.

For the past 3 days, entries to the CineChavacano Festival de Pelicula y Animacion had free public screening at the Theater Room of Centro Latino.

The Dia de Fundacion Chavacano is celebrated pursuant to Ordinance 374 authored by Councilor VP Elago five years ago.

Chabacano traces its roots to the laying of the first cornerstone of the Fort Pilar on June 23, 1635. Chabacano “borne out of necessity of an admixture of tribes, races and culture and out of it evolved a distinct language that is predominantly Spanish in origin with at least 60% Espanol and 40% native words and survived to this very day.” — Sheila Covarrubias
