The public is advised to take precautionary measures amidst the unstable weather condition prevailing over Zamboanga City the past few days.

City Caretaker and Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde said people should be ready and prepared for rain-related incidents in light of the weather condition that has shifted from dry spell to rains.

Iturralde called on barangay officials and the Barangay Risk Reduction and Management Councils all over the city to closely monitor the situation in their respective areas of responsibility and to lead response when the need arises.

He said the City Government through the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMO) and other concerned departments are on standby for any eventuality.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) has declared the dawning of La Nina, the opposite of El Nino and which brings about excessive rains.

PAG-ASA Zamboanga Chief Meteorologist Maribel Enriquez said rains are expected to intensify in July, August and September, as she warned constituents and the concerned agencies to be prepared for rain-related incidences.

Zamboanga City has experienced a long dry spell with damage to agricultural crops and fisheries reaching as much as P24 million.
