Zambo’s anti-TB efforts reap MLQ award PDF Print E-mail

Zamboanga City has been conferred as the most outstanding highly urbanized city in Mindanao in the implementation of the National Tuberculosis Control Program by the Department of Health.

Dubbed as the Manuel L. Quezon Achiever’s Award, the citation was given to the City Government for achieving a case detection rate and cure rate of more than 90%, exceeding even the national target.

The city’s efforts against tuberculosis are implemented by the City Health Office with the support of the Zamboanga Hermosa TB Council, a multi-sectoral group chaired by Mayor Beng Climaco.

Mayor Climaco together with City Health Officer Rodel Agbulos, Hermosa TB Council and other TB coordinators received the award during the Bayani ng Kalusugan Awarding Ceremony held at the Manila Hotel in Manila Wednesday afternoon, June 23.

The Manuel L. Quezon Awards is given to every outstanding local government unit and individuals who has provided support and utmost dedication to the Tuberculosis Control Program of the DOH through resource mobilization, advocacy and health human resource resulting to the improvement in the quality of service delivery and patient care at DOTS facilities in the region.

The DOH DOTS Program is a comprehensive strategy endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (IUATLD) to detect and cure TB patients in the country. DOTS can prevent new infections among children and adults, can stop resistance to anti-TB drugs and is cost-effective. Under the program, patients are required to take four kinds of drugs for six months.
