As rainy season sets in, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Zamboanga under Station Commander LTJG Jimmy Berbo is urging the public to travel safely so they can arrive at their destination safely.

“Dahil hindi natin aasahan minsan magalaw ang dagat, mas makakabuti na kapag nakita natin malaki ang alon huwag na natin piliting lumayag kasi diyan nagkakaroon ng problema.” Berbo said in an interview,

He explained that heavy rain, waves, and bad weather may also affect the vessels and it is more difficult to recover passengers in the sea in case sea accidents occur.

Relative to the this, PCG is conducting a mandatory inspection on vessels in which they check the papers of the vessel and the vessel engine to ensure the vessel’s seaworthiness.

On no overloading, Berbo said that they are strict in this matter as they are after the safety of the passengers. If a passenger vessel is overloaded, the vessel’s safety gears will not be sufficient such as life jacket which is dangerous.

Nevertheless, the PCG station chief assured that they are ready to respond in case of emergency. — R.G. A A. Go
