Congressman Celso Lobregat has focused on the distribution of non-food items last Saturday and Sunday for the fire victims of Sta.Catalina.

After seeing the fire victims’ need for cooking and kitchen utensils as well as other essential household items, Lobregat sought the assistance of Department of Social Welfare and Development IX (DSWD) Regional Director Atty. Araceli Solamillo for the additional distribution of relief goods.

Initially, non-food items like plates and glasses were prepared for distribution on Saturday, which was followed the next day by personal hygiene kits to more than 4,600 individuals housed at Don GEMS covered court.

The situation became worst because upon arriving at the Don GEMS Elementary Schooll evacuation center, Lobregat was met by a chaotic and unorderly crowd moving without a relief distribution system which he immediately tried to correct and improve in coordination with the DSWD personnel and Barangay officials led by Chairman Jimmy Villaflores.

Accompanying Lobregat during the distribution of the non-food items were Councilors BG Guingona, Ismael Musa and incoming Councilors Rudy Lim and Boday Cabato.

Lobregat himself organized the line-up and tagging documents of fire victims who wanted to move ahead of others just to receive the items being distributed amid rainy condition.

“We need to fix the system of distribution first before we continue distributing it. We wanted this to be fair with all of them and to avoid those persons who will be taking advantage of the present situation,” Lobregat stressed.

After several minutes of discussion and exchange of ideas and experiences with the DSWD, barangay officials and the solon himself, the distribution of relief goods went smoothly till the very end in which all the victims received equal share of the avaialble non-food items.

Lobregat urged the social workers and the barangay officials to adopt this permanent system to ensure that the right assistance and benefits being given by the government agencies and non-government organizations go to the real fire victims of the June 21 conflagration in Sta.Catalina.

The solon also arranged for the distribution of more relief goods in the coming days. This will also include intervention from DOLE and the barangay officials themselves. – Dexter Yap
