The City of Zamboanga joins the nationwide observance of the 2016 Disaster Consciousness Month slated for the entire month of July.

Spearheaded by the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) in partnership with Local Disaster Risk Reduction Management Councils (LDRRMCs) all over the nation, the National Disaster Consciousness Month (NDCM) is an initiative held each year to heighten the public’s awareness on hazards and other threats, pursuant to Executive Order 136 of 1999.

This year’s theme is “Kahandaan at Patugon sa Sakuna, Tunkulin ng Bawat Isa”.

The month-long observance kicked off with a motorcade and a launching program on Friday, July 1 at Paseo del Mar.

For its part, the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office has prepared a line-up of activities supporting the advocacies of the NDCM. Among the activities slated for July are: the formulation of the La Niña Contingency Plan on July 1, a bloodletting activity on July 15, and a seminar workshop on flood contingency plan set tentatively on July 28-29.

The CDRRMO will also be participating in the Gawad KALASAG Awarding from July 13-15 after being adjudged as the best performing CDRRMO in Region IX.

The OCD IX, as lead agency for the NDCM in Zamboanga Peninsula, likewise has slated several training workshops on emergency telecommunication, contingency planning, and DRRM training in the region as well as the Resilience Mobile Photography Contest for the entire month of July

In support of the NDCM, the OCD IX also encourages local government agencies and residents to use #ResiliencePH in social media posts to raise awareness of DRRM through infographics, news and photo releases online. — Jasmine  Mohammadsali
