The Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST) is in the processof building a P10-million aquaculture center for their students at the school campus in Barangay Victoria, this city.

ZSCMST administrative officer Roderick D. Trio said in an interview that the site will serve as production laboratory for the students of Bachelor of Science in Aquaculture and Bachelor of Science in fisheries.

The school-funded project currently is under site development to include the improvement of their 9.5 hectares fishpond.

“We are improving the fishpond so that the students can have their actual performance in the area at the same time serve as production area,” Trio said.

Aside from these, there will also be construction of a two-storey building in the area to house the training rooms and offices which are now ready for bidding.

Fishpond products can also be grown in the said area by the students such as bangus, crabs, lobsters and shrimps. At the same time they can study these marine products.

According to Trio, they are hoping that the project will be finished within this year. The ZSCMST is region 9’s only school of fisheries which specialized in fishery courses. — R.G. A A. Go
