Mayor Beng Climaco Monday assured some 600 drug dependents of her administration’s support in their rehabilitation from chemical dependence.

In a program dubbed Project: Double Barrel “Oplan Tokhang” (Katok, Hangyo) with the theme: “Learning to live without drugs one step at a time” is the city’s response to President Rody Duterte’s “invitation” to drug dependents and pushers to voluntarily submit themselves to authorities for processing and rehabilitation.

The mayor told the assembled drug dependents that the process would be difficult, “Sa ayaw mo or sa gusto, once matikman mo na, mahirap na magbago.”

A firm believer of giving one an opportunity to repent and change his ways, the city mayor encouraged those present that the decision must start with themselves.

“Ito ang unang hakbang sa ating pagbabago. Simulan niyo, simulan natin, sama-sama nating tapusin sa tulong ng Poong Maykapal, Inshallah!” Climaco told the assembled self-confessed drug personalities.

Last week, the mayor announced her forthcoming executive order creating a special task group, tentatively named “TF Nuevo Vida,” that will address the issues and concerns arising from the expected influx of drug surrenderees in the city. The task group, she said, will look into the possibility of providing livelihood or job opportunities and rehabilitation of drug pushers and users, who voluntarily surrendered to the authorities for fear of getting killed.

Meanwhile, the mayor enjoined the support of government line agencies, religious leaders, families and friends in rehabilitating drug personalities. She especially called on families with drug dependents to be the first to submit the latter to rehabilitation. — Claudine Uniana
