The Commission on Population (Popcom) regional office 9 has announced that the office was successful as region’s growth rate went down during the recent Philippine  Statistics Authority (PSA) 9’s Census of Population conducted last August 1, 2015.

“Pwede nating sabihin we are successful at pwede din natin pagtulung tulungan ng iba’t ibang ahensiya para mas madaling natin maatain yung demographic dividend,” Reynaldo O. Wong, Popcom 9 regional director said in an interview.

However, he said that at the rate we are currently going, the region can feel the effects of low growth rate during the year 2050.

“2050 pa tayo makakaranas ng kaginhawahan unless ibaba pa natin (referring to the growth rate),” Wong said.

During the PSA’s 2015 Census of Population, region 9, registered a population of 3,629,783 with an annual growth rate of 1.21 percent while for 2010, the region’s count was only at 3,407,353 with an annual growth rate of 1.87 percent.

For Zamboanga City, based on the August 2015 census of population the city now has a total population of 861,799 with an annual growth rate of 1.26 percent compared to 2010, where the city’s count was only 807,129 with an annual growth rate of 2.98 percent.

Population growth rate refers to as the increase in the country’s population during a period of time.

According to Wong, the reason for the low growth rate are as follows: information drive of the office; the public is now open to family planning; and the Department of Health now also have its information dissemination thru commercials.

The advantage of low growth rate is lesser economic stress and the government’s economic programs can also cope up such as job creation. (R.G. A A. Go)
