The City of Zamboanga, through its City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO), was conferred top honors at the awarding ceremonies for the Gawad KALASAG held today, July 14 at Dipolog City.

The City’s CDRRMO placed 1st for the best highly-urbanized CDRRMC in all of Zamboanga Peninsula during the field validation conducted by the Gawad KALASAG Regional Selection Committee (GK-RSC) last April.

Receiving the award for the City is CDRRMO Head Dr. Elmeir Apolinario. The awarding ceremony is held in line with the national celebration of the National Disaster Consciousness Month.

Apolinario said the regional award qualifies the City to compete in the national level of the Gawad KALASAG where Zamboanga City will compete with other highly-urbanized cities like Davao, Cebu, Manila, and Quezon City in terms of disaster preparedness, emergency response, and rehabilitation.

The City’s CDRRMO merited a first-place performance as the best highly-urbanized CDRMMCs in region IX where it garnered a score of 86%. It will undergo desk evaluations and compete with other provinces all over the Philippines in order to qualify for the field validation phase to be conducted by the National Selection Committee.

Kalasag stands for Kalamid at Sakuna Labanan, Saritiling Galing at Kaligtasan and the competition aims to recognize outstanding performance of local disaster councils (LDCCs), private/volunteer organizations, local, national and international NGOs, donor agencies, and the communities as major stakeholders in implementing significant disaster risk management projects and activities and in providing humanitarian response and assistance to affected communities. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
