Claret School of Zamboanga City's Red Roosters was crowned champion in the 2010 MILO-sponsored BEST Center Passerelle Mindanao regional finals held on October 23-24 at the Rizal Memorial College Gym, Davao City.

“Praise God for the victory given to Claret...the best part was the victory but the hardest part was seeing the boys scourging their way to get it,” said Mrs. Earlie Cris Barredo, mother of Earl Russelle G. Barredo, one of the youngest members of the team. “My heart stopped every time the ball got into the hands of the opponent. I was in grip of my rosary cheering and giving the boys’ confidence and power with our amazing coaches and the undying support of the other parents. In few minutes with Claret leading, the Rizal Memorial Coliseum was so small to accommodate my voice as it banged every time I shouted Go Claret! Go Zamboanga! It was such a victorious moment for Claret Team."

The Red Roosters got a head start by defeating Ateneo de Davao University's Blue Eagles (AdDU) in the first round with 18 points interval. In the second round, CSZC continued to dominate as they outmaneuvered Notre Dame of Dadiangas University (NDDU) from General Santos in a tight match that ended to a 1-point-victory (73-72).  However, in the third round, the Roosters got stunned in a 70-53 score match by the Sacred Heart of Jesus Montessori School from Cagayan de Oro. But these two teams would meet again, this time with a higher price at stake -- the regional championship.    Claret would not make the same mistake twice, as they tightened their grip both at the defensive and offensive end and at the final beat of the buzzer, the Roosters reigned supreme (68-55).

"They were all very strong competitors and I am very happy we won," said Alvin Fabian, CSZC's forward, in an interview Monday morning.

Joseph Parot, team captain, led the Red Roosters to victory together with the help of his other teammates namely Alvin Fabian, Ivan Araneta, Max Glenn Temblor, Jeremy James Gallemit, Al-MudzlinLadjamalik, Earl Russelle Barredo, Ronan Kent Barona, Bernard Tacula, Matthew Apostol, ByronnVelarde, James Eribal, Joemar Lloyd Sabanal, Robin Wee and KherlDarylle Ponce. They were also methodically coached by Mr. Roy Lim, head coach and Mr. Larry Victorio.

These patient and well-trained coaches were not disappointed by the match as the game was tantalizingly close until the dying seconds of the game. They were indeed very overwhelmed by the Roosters’ last acts on the basketball hardcourt because these are now cemented in the hearts and minds of the Mindanao basketball fans.

The CSZC's Red Roosters, Mindanao's Regional Champion, together with the International School of Better Beginnings, Luzon's Regional Champion, and the winner of the Visayas Region Milo Passerelle Championship that will be held on November 6-7will be advancing to the nationals that will be held at Cebu City on November 21-22.

At the end of the day the Rooster marked up his territory, shrugged his feet, held his head up high, took a deep breath and crowed at the top of his lungs --"to the Nationals!".
