The City Government Friday morning distributed financial assistance to families affected by the June 21 fire incident in Sta. Catalina prioritizing the 248 families occupying the covered court at the Don Gregorio Evangelista Memorial School (Don GEMS).

Mayor Beng Climaco personally led the distribution together with personnel from the City Social Welfare and Development Office and the City Treasurer’s Office at the CDRRMO compound. She urged the affected families to use the money in rebuilding their lives, as she assured them that the local government is doing its best to find them a new home.

“El local government ya puede came dale cuanto cen con ustedes para ayuda man start up,” Climaco told the families. She added that while the money may not be that much, she hopes the families would be able to find other means.

The cash assistance is in addition to the food and relief assistance earlier given to the families by the local government including the national agencies as well as private groups and individuals.

For house owners, the cash assistance is P5,000 per family while house sharers and renters get P3,000 each. The amount released by the city reached over P2 million for the over 600 families affected by the fire.

Based on the timetable set by the city, the families are expected to vacate the evacuation center and transfer to other designated temporary relocation sites. — Claudine Uniana
