The Commission on Elections (Comelec) Zamboanga City office has registered a total of 2,059 youth and regular voters during the registration for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) election.

Of the 2,059 youth and regular voters, 1,110 came from District 1 and 949 for District 2.

District 1 covers 37 barangays in the west coast while District 2, covers 61 barangays in the city’s east coast.

“It’s time for you to exercise your right of suffrage ... Debe man register para puede bota,” Atty. Lerdo I. Matildo Jr., Comelec Zamboanga City, District 2 election officer, said in an interview.

The election officer noticed that few are registering when it comes to those aged 15 to 17 years old. He said that the possible reason is only those SK registrants 18 to 24 years old may run for SK while those 15 to 17 years old can only vote for their SK representatives.

The voters’ registration took place from July 15, weekends and holidays included.

Registrants who are interested must personally file their applications with the Offices of Election Officer on those stated dates from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Applicants must bring with them proper identification to include birth certificate, identification cards, or school records.

The registration is open for first-time voters both in regular and SK polls as well as reactivation for those who have been deactivated for failing to participate in at least two consecutive elections.

Registrants for barangay elections must be at least 18 years old by the time of the elections while 15 years old for SK elections. They must be a resident of the Philippines for at least one year.

Voters who 18 years old to 30 years old can participate in both barangay and SK elections.
