A captured Abu Sayyaf militant was shot dead Monday afternoon after he grabbed the gun of a town police chief in Lamitan City, Basilan.

The police chief, Sr. Insp. Gean Gallardo, was slightly wounded in his fingers after grappling for control of the handgun that Mannan Abubakar alias Pido  tried to  snatch from his holster inside the Lamitan City Police Station.

Richard Falcatan, station manager of Basilan based dxNO radio, told Daily Zamboanga Times that Gallardo was doing the rounds inside the police station at past 1 p.m. when Abubakar seized his gun from the holster.

It was not clear on where exactly the gun snatching happened — inside or outside the cell where the militant was detained.

Falcatan quoted Gallardo as saying that Abubakar was arrested recently on the strength of a warrant for kidnapping and bombing.
