The Department of Health (DOH) was able to deworm a total of 172,037 school children from region 9 under the ongoing National School Deworming Month this July.

Dr. Sitti Nurussamsi Amilassan, DOH deworming program manager, said they are targeting to deworm a total of 701,423 school children in Region 9.

From July 1 to July 18, 2016, the DOH was able to deworm 172,037 school children which is equivalent to 24.52 percent.

The 172,037 school children who were dewormed came from the following areas: Zamboanga del Sur, 31,719; Pagadian, 8,642; Zamboanga del Norte, 17,097; Dipolog City, 4,755; Dapitan City, 3,654; Zamboanga Sibugay, 51,502; Zamboanga City, 53,373 ; and, Isabela City 1,295.

These school children were given Albendazole 400mg chewable tablet on full stomach which means that the school children had their breakfast before taking the deworming medicine.

“Gusto namin ma-meet yung target and gusto namin matutukan yung estudyante during the conduct of the National School Deworming Month. Since konti lang yung heath workers, nasa memorandum na kapag school deworming day dapat may present na health worker,” Amilassan said.

These heath workers will monitor if there are adverse effects that will occur during the program.

However, according Amilassan, at present there were few who complained of mild stomach ache and no one was brought to the hospital.

Before the office is conducting the program for only one day now it was changed to one month and covering school children from Kinder to Senior High School.

High school students were also included because many of them have anemia and low school performance.

Last January 2016 DOH 9 was able to deworm 512,130 school children for Zamboanga Peninsula which translates to 81.28 percent where their target was to deworm 630,074 school children. (R.G. A A. Go)
