The town was painted red Wednesday night when the city government in partnership with the Zamboanga City Blood Council staged “Un Noche Memorable.”
The event marked the first year that the city’s blood council honored and cited its contributors for their participation in the council’s advocacy for blood donation and support to the city’s health programs.

“The provision of adequate and safe blood is vital to the effort to achieve key health-related targets like United Nations Millennium Development Goals of reducing child mortality, improving maternal health and combatting HIV/AIDS,” City Health Officer Rodelin Agbulos said in his welcome message.

The city government and the Zamboanga City Blood Council have been actively recruiting blood donors to help replenish the city’s blood bank and help save lives.
“Giving blood is simple yet immensely helpful,” Agbulos said, urging barangay officials to recruit as many of their residents to donate blood.

Mayor Celso Lobregat, who was in Manila last Tuesday to receive his sixth Sandugo citation and fourth Hall of Fame award, lamented the lack of awardees from the region particularly the city. He urged barangay officials to vie for Sandugo recognition by advocating for blood donation among their residents.

“This program should start in the barangay. We have the ordinance creating the Barangay Blood Council. Unfortunately, only a few of the barangays are implementing this ordinance,” Lobregat said. He revealed the plan to issue an Executive Order directing for the activation of a blood council in the barangays as well as for voluntary blood donation and blood typing.

“Bien importante gayot el donacion del sangre especialmente na barangay cay el maga paciente ta sale na de ustedes barangay,” said City Councilor and chair of city council on health Lilia Nuño added.

“Un Noche Memorable” also featured a mini-fashion show featuring select employees from the City Health Office in Monching Fernandez and Roberto Torres creations.
Also in attendance were Councilor Rudy Lim, Philippine Red Cross Administrator Vic Liozo, city department heads, officials and members of the Zamboanga City Blood Council.
