The Department of Agriculture (DA) regional office has allotted P27 million for any possible damages to crops due to flooding and other similar effects of La Niña.

Constancio G. Alama, DA 9 regional director, said in an interview that the bulk of the money will be used to procure rice, corn, and vegetables seeds to be distributed to the farmers may suffer from La Niña’s adverse effects.

Alama said that possible problems that may happen during La Niña are crop damage due to flooding and pest to include rats, army worm, and others.

Meanwhile, DA is also conducting an information caravan in Region 9 in coordination with the Local Government Unit (LGU) and farmers on La Niña.

The caravan is being done by province and expected to finish by the month of October.

“Every year, with or without La Niña, may programa kami para kung dumating handa tayo,” Alama said.

During the information caravan farmers are taught what plants to plant and other good agricultural practices.

The department is also urging farmers to plant early maturing rice, root crops, and vegetables during this period. (R.G. A A. Go)
