NBI-9 pounds on sellers of fake Mighty cigarrettes PDF Print E-mail

The National Bureau of Investigation-9 (NBI-9) launched over the weekend cease and desist operations against six business establishments selling a fake Mighty cigarettes in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Atty. Manuel  Almendares, NBI-9 director, said that it took his a period of time to monitor and observe the selling of fake cigarettes.

“Our operations are covered with search warrants against the illegal sellers of fake Mighty cigarettes. The search warrants were issued by Judge Anthony  D. Tisaw of Branch 24 of  Regional Trial Court of 9th Judicial Region based in Ipil.

Almendares said that the selling of fake ciigarettes is a violation of the intellectual Property Code of the Philippines,particularly Section 155 in relation to Section 170 of R.  8293 known as the Intellectual Code of the Philippines.

According to Almendares, one of the violators is Zhiyi Yang of Fujian China, who was caught selling fake Mighty cigarettes. Also caught was an owner of a  tricycle seized by NBI for using his unit as courier  for fake Mighty cigarettes. The tricycle  has been impounded at the NBI-9 in Zamboanga City.  Yang was also detained  at the Zamboanga Sibugay NBI Provincial Office in Ipil.

“ We are ready to file the case against the culprits selling fake Mighty cigarettes for infringement of the law. We urge the public not to patronize any fake cigarettes because the Dept. of Health  has warned that it is bad for their health,” Almendares said. — Allen Abastillas
