The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) recently bagged the Gawad Kalasag Award for highly urbanized city category in Zamboanga Peninsula and is automatically the region’s representative in the national competition.

Gawad Kalasag which stands for Kalamidad at Sakuna Labanan, Sariling Galing at Kaligtasan, is a recognition of outstanding performance of local disaster councils (LDCCs), private/volunteer organizations, local, national and international NGOs, donor agencies and the communities as major stakeholders in implementing significant disaster risk management projects and activities and in providing humanitarian response and assistance to affected communities. The regional search is organized by the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council headed by the Office of Civil Defense.

CDRRMO Chief Dr. Elmeir Apolinario and staff personally received the award in a formal ceremony at the Zamboanga del Norte Convention Center in Dipolog City last July 14 coinciding with the celebration of the National Disaster Consciousness Month.

Being the first placer in the regional competition, Zamboanga City will now view for the national award where it will compete with other HUCs in terms of disaster preparedness, emergency response and rehabilitation. — Sheila Covarrubias
