The Department of Health (DOH) regional office has warned Local Government Units (LGUs) and companies to coordinate with the office and DOH accredited drug testing centers if they want to conduct random drug testing where remote collection of urine samples will be conducted.

Rodrigo Villa, DOH licensing officer, said in an interview that what happens now is that some LGUs and companies conduct their own random drug testing in which remote collection of urine samples is made without coordination with the DOH and DOH accredited drug testing center which is prohibited.

He stressed the DOH have several guidelines for random drug testing which include: Coordination with a DOH accredited drug testing center where they will have a memorandum of agreement; they have to secure permit for remote collection at DOH Manila; and the drug testing kits must also be validated by DOH.

If these guidelines will not be followed, there is a possibility that the result will be invalid.

“Dapat kasi yung resulta galing sa DOH accredited drug testing centers,” Villa said.

Region 9 has a total of 23 DOH accredited drug testing centers and 12 of these testing centers are located in Zamboanga City.

DOH 9 already has a monitoring team and in Zamboanga City, a drug testing center was issued by the DOH cease and desist order because they are not following the right procedure when it comes to drug testing.

The office is also conducting close monitoring on those who conduct random drug testing. They see to it that proper procedure is being done in urine collection and proper procedure in the transport of these urine samples to the clinic or drug testing centers.

“Sa mga companies at LGU natin, dapat pag nag conduct tayo ng random drug testing kailangan makipag ugnayan muna sa DOH kung sino yung accredited drug testing centers sa vicinity,” Villa said.

Meanwhile, for those who want to undergo drug testing, they can do it at DOH accredited drug testing centers

For those employees who turned out to be positive, the urine sample will still have to undergo confirmatory testing as the accredited drug testing center only does the screening and not the confirmatory test.

The confirmation is being done in Manila or Davao city and once the result is confirmed, this will be the final one as the confirmatory test is more sensitive. (R.G. A A. Go)
