The National Economic Development Authority-9 (NEDA-9) has spelled several benefits of the Mindanao Railway System, a banner program of President Rodrigo Duterte that is being pushed through a House Bill authored by Zamboanga City Congressman Celso Lobregat.

Teresita Socorro Ramos, NEDA regional director, said in an interview that the Mindanao Railway System will improve connectivity among the different regions  which in turn increase the level of exchange in terms of goods, products, and people.

She explained that when there is greater mobility, economic growth will follow and tourism is enhancedbecause people can transfer easily from one place to another.

Business will also grow as the railway will have several stopovers where businesses will be established, she added..

According to Ramos, earlier study indicates that a railway system is not feasible yet at this time for the whole of Mindanao.

“But this time, it would only be feasible for the Cagayan, Iligan area for first phase baka succeeding na lang yung iba kasi you also have to see the profitability aspect,” Ramos said.

The Mindanao Railway System is one of the banner programs of President Rodrigo Duterte.

“Maybe because it’s one of the projects of the President, I think they are taking a second look and really study the entire Mindanao,” the regional director said.

Moreover  she said that at present a feasibility study on the railway system is being conducted which is expected to be finished by the end of August.

Profitability, according to Ramos, must also be checked to make sure the railway system will earn income so that the maintenance of the trains can be sustained.

At present travel to Mindanao is far. Zamboanga to Pagadian and Dipolog City will take six to eight hours via bus while 16 hours for Cagayan de Oro City. (R.G. A A. Go)
