Mayor Beng Climaco together with Zamboanga City Water District officials on Monday forged a memorandum of agreement providing for the construction of a P165 million sewerage treatment plant at the Magay area inside the main public market complex.

The MOA is a revised document that calls for the use of the city’s 2,196 square meter meter property in Magay for the construction of the sewerage project by the ZCWD.

Aside from Mayor Climaco and ZCWD General Manager Chito Vasquez, other signatories to the agreement were the Water District Board led by president Edwin Caliolio and City Legal officer and OIC City Administrator Atty. Jesus Carbon.

About a month ago, the mayor accompanied by officials from concerned City Departments including representatives from the ZCWD and the USAID-BeSecure, visited the proposed site of the STP which is a subject of an earlier MOA forged by the city and the ZCWD a few years ago.

Per assessment of the ZCWD, the project which would be located below the city’s Material Recovery Facility in Magay would require a huge investment compared to an above ground STP facility.

The ZCWD has presented the new plan detailing the STP for the amendment of the MOA to conform with the revised design.

The project will be undertaken by the ZCWD in coordination with the City Environment and Natural Resources Office with technical support from the USAID- BeSecure (Water Security for Resilient Economic Growth and Stability) project. — Sheila Covarrubias
