The  Department of Agriculture, in coordination with the Philippine Coconut Authority, is currently working for assistance to coconut farmers affected by the “cocolisap” epidemic in Basilan province.

Lamitan City Mayor Rose U. Furigay disclosed that mayors of Basilan along with Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Governor Mujiv Hataman and Provincial Gov. Jim Salliman discussed and tackled the cocolisap problem during a meeting with President Rodrigo R. Duterte and Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol in Malacañang last Monday night.

Furigay said the meeting was very cordial, in which Duterte  assured the Basilan leaders that the coconut farmers will be given assistance to fight the cocolisap pest.

The President also instructed Piñol to coordinate with the Philippine Coconut Authority on how to fight the coconut pest.

According to Furigay, the farmers of Lamitan City and other parts of Basilan and will be given insecticide and pesticide to eradicate the cocolisap pest along with other interventions.

On the otherhand, Furigay said that during their meeting with Duterte, the president also mentioned rubber tree production and its rubber extract.

She said that she has always reminded the rubber tree extract producers to maintain high quality so that it will not affect in the world market.

Furigay also suggested during the meeting that farmers should be given a fair market price of their produce, and farmers must be protected by the government because an unscrupulous cartel manipulates the price and deprive the farmers of fair income.

Because of price manipulation, the cartel are enjoying and happy, but the farmers who work hard are suffering.

“Farmers should be given justice ontheir hard labor,” Furigay said. — Allen Abastillas
