In partnership with Madjlis Al-khutaba of Maluso, Islamic Development Bank Graduates Association (IGA) Team Philippines sponsored ‘Janazah Training for Men with Actual Demo’ last July 24, 2016 at the office of Madjlis Al-Khutaba, Townsite, Maluso, Basilan. The said training was attended by 92 individuals —  79 Imams coming from 31 different mosques in Maluso, and the rest was composed of guests, lecturer, officers and advisers of Madjlis, and the secretariat. Themed with “Preparing Future Imams of Tomorrow, Today”, the said training was presumed to perfect and correct wrong practices of janazah, if there are any; awaken the Imams’ sense of obligation; and ensure continuity of janazah skills for the Muslims. Janazah is the practice of bathing the corpse before burial according to Islamic faith.

Ustadz Hussin Manatad from Tabuk, Isabela City graced the training as the lecturer.  The training was divided into two parts; the lecture was done in the morning, the actual demo in the afternoon. Ustadz Hussin said the lecture was more of a review and refinement since the participants are considered knowledgeable and skilled in janazah. Although some of them were first timers or those who aspired to be Imam in their own community someday. His lecture included the proper way of istinjah (where certain parts of the body are washed of secretions) which is the first step of janazah to the proper way of burial. He also entertained questions regarding janazah after his lecture and demo.

Mr. Timothy A. Ijiran, IGA Team Philippines National President, informed the participants that it was the association’s advocacy to conduct activities like this which can help strengthen the true teachings of Islam and induce social change. As part of the scholars’ bond to Islamic Development Bank (IDB) which is headquartered in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, graduates like Mr. Ijiran are required to pay back as soon as they are able to the IDB Scholarship  which is a study now pay later program. The money collected then is used to finance activities like the janazah training. A training of the same was held in Maluso in 2013, sponsored still by IGA. Ending the training, were words of impression by the participants; chosen Imams expressed gratitude both to IGA and Madjlis. It is worth to note that IGA has sponsored many activities which are socially relevant to the youths and Muslims in Maluso, and plans to hold more in the near future in keeping the momentum towards achieving peace and prosperity especially in Muslim communities.
