A total of 2,322 suspected drug users have yielded to the Lamitan City Police Office since July 1.

Lamitan City Police Office OIC Sr. Insp. Jason Ray Z. Gomera said that since day one of the Duterte presidency, they conducted documentations and photo mugshots among all drug suspects who voluntarily yielded to the police.

The suspected drug users also signed documents pledging that they would not go back to using any illegal drugs.

“Wala kaming magawa kundi i-document sila para record purposes. Wala din naman kaming lugar para i-rehab po sila,” Gomera said.

Lamitan City Mayor Rose U. Furigay said the city has no available fundsto rehab the suspected drug users.

“ To send them to rehabilitation center involves expenses. It needs logistics, funding for their food and physical needs for hygiene, payment for doctors. The city has no funding for this kind of situation except to donate something,” Furigay lamented.

Meanwhile, Vice Mayor Roderick H. Furigay  along with Sr. Insp. Gomera and troopers distributed foodstuff to the people in  Barangay Sabung near the boundary with Tipo-Tipo  recently. The people in the area were affected by the ongoing military operations in Tipo-Tipo.

“Their evacuation near the city is a precautionary measure so that they will  not be caught in a crossfire,” Furigay said. — Allen Abastillas
