A family of three was seized by suspected Abu Sayyaf linked gunmen in Barangay Kulisap, Payao, Zamboanga Sibugay last Friday night.

A police report disclosed that seven men broke into the house of the Romoc family and dragged Elmer Romoc, his wife Nora Awing Romoc and their son Ricson.

The gunmen pushed the three into a vehicle then they sped away.

Zamboanga Sibugay police director, Senior Supt. Romulo Cleve Taboso, said Saturday his personnel are working with military forces to track down the gunmen.

“Nasa laot pa sila (They are still in the high seas),” Taboso told reporters.

The other troops have been scouring the coastal areas.

He said the gunmen took the victims from their residence at 6:30 p.m.

The victims, he said, do not belong to a wealthy family since the husband is “only an employee and not the municipal treasurer” of Payao.

He said although the family owns a store in Barangay Kulisap, it is only a small typical sari-sari store.

Based on intelligence report, the suspects belong to the Tahir Ustadz group that have ties with the Sulu-based Abu Sayyaf, Taboso said, adding that they belong to a new crime group that has emerged in the province.

Meanwhile, Glady A. Lopez, barangay chairperson, was quoted as saying that the suspects were armed with M16 and  M14 rifles.

She said barangay peace keepers were not able to respond because the suspects were wearing military uniforms.

Men of the 102nd Brigade and the Philippine National Police have launched a pursuit operation fort he suspects.  — Dan Toribio Jr.
