City Sports Development Officer Dr. Cecilia Atilano is hopeful weightlifting as a sport will get better attention and support from the government following Zamboanga’s own Hidilyn Diaz’s historic finish at the 2016 Summer Games.

“Weightlifting is an underdog,” Atilano told members of the local media during yesterday’s regular press briefing at City Hall. “Boxing yung tinututukan talaga. Next to boxing, parang wala na.”

Diaz’s performance in the Olympic has demonstrated that Filipinos can also excel in sports other that boxing. “Pwede rin tayong mag-excel sa weightlifting kasi hindi nagre-require ng height, hindi nagre-require ng ibang bagay, kundi lakas lang at determinasyon.”

The city sports officer also revealed that calls from various sports commissioners have started to come in, positive signs pointing to possible support from national officials.

“We still have hope para sa young athletes,” she continued.

Atilano further added that the city is grooming new athletes.“We still have young weighlifters na maglalaro ngayon sa Malaysia. Sila yung prini-prepare natin sa Tokyo next Olympics and beyond.”— Claudine Uniana
