The Philippine Overseas Employment Agency-9 (POEA-9) has announced that by first week of September, Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) Balik Manggagawa (BM) will be exempted from Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC), travel tax, and terminal fee.

Marietta Bellotindos, POEA 9 regional director, said that exempted are BM’s who are returning to the same employer and jobsite and with existing record in the POEA and BM hired thru the Government Placement Branch.    This exemption is stated in the POEA Governing Board Resolution No. 12, signed by the Department of Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre Bello and POEA administrator Hans Leo Cacdac.

Bellotindos added that this is good for the OFW as they have limited time when they are vacationing in the Philippines. They must spend their time with family instead of following up papers in the office.

The BM will first have to go to a BM online facility to check if he or she is exempted from obtaining the OEC.

From January to June 2016, the POEA processed 9,569 “Balik Manggagawa”. Most of these workers are working in Kingdome of Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Brunei, Singapore, Papua New Guinea, Seychelles, Bahrain, and other countries their work includes nurses, engineers, household service workers, operator, laborers, managerial work, administrative work, agricultural, and others. — R.G.
