The City Health Office (CHO) is worried on the increase of the number of overweight children in Zamboanga City from 708 last year to 822 this year.

Virgie Sagrado, CHO nutrition division chief, said in an interview that these overweight children are aged zero to 5 years old and this was discovered after their yearly “operation timbang” conducted from January to April 2016.

According to Sagrado, overweight children are high risk to having cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

She explained that many children are overweight because unlike before, children have several physical activities by playing while most children today are just staying home watching television, playing with their gadgets, they love fast food meals and the mothers now have no time for cooking.

Because of this, the office is giving information dissemination to the parents of these overweight children when it comes to nutrition.

The nutrition chief advises that children must be given more physical activities, avoid going to fast food restaurants and for mother to cook nutritious home food.

Children must also eat fruits and vegetables, must drink natural fruit juices and avoid  soda drinks. — R.G. A A. Go)
