The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is looking forward to establishing a weightlifting training center in the Zamboanga City to discover and hone the talents of upcoming weightlifters in this part of the country.

Mayor Beng Climaco on Monday disclosed that this news came from PSC Chairman Butch Fernandez who recently flew in the City to welcome the arrival of Olympians Hidilyn Diaz and Nestor Colonia from their stint at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

“PSC Chair Butch informed us in the presence of our two representatives and officials of the Sangguniang Panlungsod present as we waited the arrival of Hidy that they are going to put up a training center in the City of Zamboanga,” said Climaco.

The chief executive said the PSC wants to establish and operationalize the training center for weightlifting immediately.

Climaco received the news with thanksgiving, noting that this development shows recognition for the efforts of the Zamboangueño weightlifters and will facilitate the training and honing of young athletes who want to follow the footsteps of Diaz and Colonia.

“We are very thankful to the PSC for offering this facility to us and recognizing the efforts of Hidilyn, Nestor, and Coach Aldanete, and all those who have sacrificed so much,” she said.

Climaco said the city is looking forward to hosting regional athletic meets in the future once renovation of the Grandstand is completed in order to promote sports development and sports tourism, and to tap the potentials of Zamboangueño athletes.

The city government’s sports program is likewise being complemented by the annual Summer Learn to Play A Sports, and Climaco identified weightlifting along with pencaksilat, taekwando, karatedo, soccer, softball, and boxing as the city’s focus sports.— Jasmine Mohammadsali
