Mayor Beng Climaco has expressed support to the idea of organizing a sports tourism development program in Zamboanga City following the inspiration from the highly celebrated Olympic triumph of Zamboangueño weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz.

“We will really open the city of Zamboanga to sports tourism once the ongoing rehabilitation of the grandstand is completed, and as a start off we will host the regional meet and the regional selection for Batang Pinoy Games,” Climaco said in answer to a question fielded by a reporter during Monday’s press briefing in City Hall.

She said the idea of a sports tourism development plan will complement the city government’s annual “Summer Learn to Play a Sports Program,” which is an avenue for the city to select its pool of athletes for national and internal competitions.

Climaco said the city could probably share to athletes from other placed its focused sports from weightlifting to pencaksilat, taekwando, karatedo, soccer, softball, and boxing.

The chief executive was also elated by the plan of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) to establish a weightlifting training center in the Zamboanga City to discover and hone the talents of upcoming weightlifters in this part of the country.

The mayor disclosed that this news came from PSC Chairman Butch Fernandez who recently flew in to welcome the arrival of Olympians Hidilyn Diaz and Nestor Colonia from their stint at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

“PSC Chair Butch informed us in the presence of our two representatives and officials of the Sangguniang Panlungsod hat they are going to put up a training center in the City of Zamboanga,” she said, adding that the PSC wants to establish and operationalize the weightlifting training center immediately.— Vic Larato
