Heavily-armed men belonging to an ISIS-affiliated group have stormed a jail and sprung eight of its members in Marawi City/

The attack on the provincial jail of Marawi City, Lanao del Sur around 5:40 p.m. Saturday resulted to the escape of eight members of the Maute group as well as 20 other prisoners, Chief Supt. Agripino Javier, police chief of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM),   told MindaNews.

Th Maute group based in the central Mindanao province of Lanao del Sur recently pledged allegiance to ISIS along with the Abu Sayyaf in Basilan and Sulu.

Javier said the attackers numbering about 50 and armed with with high powered firearms rescued their eight jailed comrades, including three women  who were arrested by army and police forces on Monday.

He said the assault rifles of two jail guards were seized by the attackers, who also took with them another guard after rescuing the eight members.  The abducted guard was later released.

Javier quoted a field report as saying the Maute attackers and their eight freed comrades transferred from motor vehicles to motorized boats in their escape.

MindaNews quoted the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA) as saying the attackers were led by Abdullah Maute, whose group engaged in a series of fireights with army troops on February in Lanao del Sur that left 20 members and three soldiers dead as well causing the evacuation of more than 300 families.

The NICA said intelligence units have been directed to conduct “enhanced monitoring”and that photographs and plate numbers of getaway vehicles were distributed to police in the region.

On Monday, army soldiers and police officers intercepted a Toyota van reportedly carrying explosives in Lanao del Sur. Eight of those aboard were arrerted,. Authorities suspected the explosives were either intended for an army brigade camp in nearby Iligan City or the citywide feast celebration in the predominantly Christian city of Cagayan de Oro.
