Reiterating her firm stand against smuggling, Mayor Beng Climaco recently challenged the Bureau of Customs to do their work as the agency supposed to be in the frontline on matters related to such illegal activities.

In a television interview last Thursday, Mayor Climaco said other agencies particularly the local government unit along with the police and the barangays are doing their share in the fight against smuggling.

“Bureau of Customs do your work because we are already doing our task,” the chief executive declared. She said it is very discouraging to note that while other agencies are exhausting all efforts to prevent Zamboanga from being the dumping ground for smuggled items, the agency supposed to be in the forefront of the anti-smuggling campaign seems not to be aggressive in its drive.

“We are very serious in our anti-smuggling campaign ever since we started [our term as mayor]”, the mayor stressed as she mentioned anew instances when various items confiscated by other police and barangay authorities were later discovered missing at the Bureau of Customs warehouse.

An inquiry has been conducted on the matter but the results were not so convincing, she added.

The mayor stressed that investigations on smuggling issues should be exhausted properly so that those involved in the illegal activity will be meted with the law. Reports about alleged involvement of some officials or individuals to smuggling activities should also be properly validated by other intelligence communities. “Investigations have to be done because the truth must be revealed as to the persons responsible,” she said.  — Sheila Covarrubias
