The vice president of the Philippine Weightlifting Association, Elbert Atilano has revealed that P 220,000 worth of weightlifting equipment  have arrived in Zamboanga City for the training of the city’s weightlifters.

According to Atilano, two sets of barbells arrived Sunday, to include weightlifting belt, shoes, and suits given by the International Weightlifting Federation.

He said that this is very timely as they lack equipment for weightlifting and this will be of great help to the weightlifting athletes.

The new equipment will be kept at the Universidad de Zamboanga which is the main training center for weightlifting.

Currently, there are 100 active weightlifters in this city, practicing at the Universidad de Zamboanga and barangays Mampang, and Mercedes, Atilano said.

As to the training center for weightlifting, Atilano wants it placed inside the Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex which is now under rehabilitation.

He said that documents are now being prepared for the said project to be realized.

Atilano explained that the training center for weightlifting must be placed inside the sport complex because the other sports facilities are there which weightlifting athletes can also use. Other athletes as well can also use the training center for weightlifting.

The national government thru the Philippine Sports Commission is set to establish training centers in three particular areas outside Metro Manila. For Zamboanga City weightlifting, for Dumaguete archery, while for Davao City diving. — R.G. A A. Go
