The City Agriculturist Office continues assistance to drought-stricken farmers and fishpond operators in an effort to help them recoup their losses incurred during the long dry spell.

City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat said milkfish (bangus) and prawn fingerlings were distributed to fishpond operators August 30-Sept. 1 as part of the city’s assistance to the agriculture sector.

Some P2 million worth of fish/shrimp fry and fingerling – 4 million pieces of bangus fry and 3 million pieces of prawn fingerlings were acquired by the city for distribution.

Some 2,000 bags of vermin cast were also distributed to the fishpond operators.

The different City Agricultural field offices served as the distribution venues. Fishpond operators gathered for the distribution as early as 4am to avoid the fry and fingerling’s exposure to the sun.

Aside from the bangus and prawn fry, the city also distributed rice seeds, corn seeds, assorted vegetable seeds, organic fertilizers, vermin cast and cassava stalks among others. — Sheila Covarrubias
