In light of the ongoing military operations in the neighboring provinces of Sulu and Basilan, Mayor Beng Climaco has called on residents to stay calm but vigilant and to always cooperate and support the implementation of pre-emptive security measures.

This, as the mayor likewise called on police and military authorities to exhaust all means to prevent criminal elements from carrying out their plans in the City. “My instructions to the police and the military, do not give the criminal elements the opportunity to do terroristic activities in Zamboanga.”

Climaco said more military troops are arriving in Zamboanga to augment the present force as part of the pre-emptive security measures being implemented by the military and police authorities.

The city’s vast shorelines are also being secured by naval and coast guard assets in an effort to safeguard the residents and the city.

“We have the land, air and sea assets. We ask for support and cooperation of our constituents, as security measures entail the support of all,” the chief executive said.

With regards to security-related text messages or posts, the mayor appealed to residents not to forward or spread the same without verification. She asked that such messages should be verified with proper authorities and in case people have information related to the presence of suspicious personalities, baggage or items and even abandoned vehicles, the same should be immediately relayed to the authorities.

The police and military are on high alert in view of possible spill over of the ongoing Sulu and Basilan military operations.

The police and the military together with the local government unit are doing the best it can to ensure peace and security and it is very important that the people should support these security measures, the mayor added. — Sheila Covarrubias
