The president of the Liga ng Mga Barangay, Jerry E. Perez, favors postponement of the barangay election so barangay officials can continue their unfinished projects.

Perez issued the statement following the call of Congress, Senate, and President Rodrigo Duterte for the postponement of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) election on October 23, 2017 instead of this year.

The presidential and local elections were held only on May 9, 2016 and the Commission on Elections (Comelec) had scheduled the barangay and SK election on October 31, 2016.

“It’s okay if the barangay election will be postponed because we can continue our barangay projects.” Perez said in an interview.

One of the projects he wants to continue is the drug testing on barangay officials.

If the extension happens, barangay captains and kagawads will remain in their post until such time an election will be conducted.

Zamboanga City’s first district consists of 37 barangays while the second district has 61 barangays.

The last SK election was conducted last 2010 while the conduct of the special barangay election was last November 25, 2013. — R.G. A A. Go
